Oh the beauty of the Lenten Rose!  How well Forrest captured this favorite flower of mine.  I think the love he showed must have enticed her to turn her face toward him and post so elegantly!  Beautifully framed and ready to bloom any time of year.

Andrea Snyder Acrylic & Wax Painting 2-26-13

Andrea Saccone Snyder
Acrylic & Wax Painting, 10" x 8"
Original, $80

Andrea often doesn't title her encaustic paintings preferring to let the viewer name them.  To me this is a view of the world from space, a cosmic splash full of passionate aliveness.  It's a vibrant place, swirling and full of presence and dynamic life.  What do you see?

If you love Andrea's work as much as I do, you'll want to come to her Art Opening/Art Party on March 1, 6 - 8pm at the Joyful Jewel.

On a Monday 5-25-13

The phone just rang with someone asking me to check an artist name on a sculpture he is writing about for Vision and Voice. Yesterday someone stopped in to write about Athena's Legacy. On Saturday, a fluid group of writers came and went, pausing to sit in chairs and write from the muse that leaped off the walls to them. Another day, a local writing teacher brought in her students to write from their hearts. Youngest person I've seen so far is 11, oldest maybe in 80's.

It's a special time at the Joyful Jewel. Energy is stirring for the third annual Vision and Voice, a lovely afternoon when writing artists and visual artists come together to present the union of their work. Perhaps a poem about a painting. Or flash fiction about a shawl. You just never know.........

Hope you'll be in to take part before March 3, the submission deadline. Our collaboration is presented to the public on Sunday, March 24, so we need the lead time to create a book of these creations.

Things always interesting here.

Kate Ladd "Wisteria II" 2-23-13

"Wisteria II"
Kate Ladd
16" x 20", Acrylic on Canvas
Original, $175

A favorite of many, this fragrant plant grows just like Kate has portrayed it.  The flowers hang luxuriously, waving in the wind, spreading their fragrance and scattering petals.  The purples of many shades contrasted by the nearly as shimmering green leaves are captured beautifully.  The smooth, sensuous branching against the delicate whispy blue sky seem to portend a favorable change in the weather.  Let's get ready for a picnic! -- well, not today in the rain but maybe tomorrow.

Vangi Cathcart "Blue Heron" 2-22-13

"Blue Heron"
Vangi Cathcart
Ink & Watercolor, ~ 19" x 23"
Original, Framed, $300

This is Vangi's newest painting is a great Great Blue Heron!  He is stalking fish on his long legs in the marsh, camouflaged in the reeds, ready to strike.  The painting has an almost silky look with sensuously soft colors of ink and watercolor.  This heron is protected and enhanced by his setting in a gorgeous silver frame.

"Frozen Sky"
Sharon Blessum
Photograph, ~ 17" x 13 1/2"
Framed, "75

This icy scene shimmers right off the page, touching you with it's pristine coldness.  Sharon has printed her amazing photograph on a metalic paper that gives it an otherworldly-sheen.  The quality is superb and the white frame (not quite visible in my photograph of the piece) sets it off even more dramatically.

Forrest Greenslade "Sunset for the Lord God Bird" 2-20-13

"Sunset for the Lord God Bird"
Forrest Greenslade
Watercolor 23" x 20"
Framed Print, $150

Forrest said, when he brought this painting in, that it is of an Ivory Billed Woodpecker, a scene from
Louisiana.  Forrest said that years ago when he was on a research trip to the wilds in that state that he and a group of bird enthusiasts believed they actually heard and saw what may have been the last of these

magnificent birds.  He certainly captured the stunning beauty and power of this long-gone woodpecker and of the swampy sunset landscape in this painting.

Florence Johnson "Full Sail" 2-18-13

"Full Sail"
Florence Johnson
Mixed Media, 16 1/2" x 20"
Original, Matted & Framed, $130

Magnificent!  A sailing ship out on a grand adventure, perhaps sailing from port to port as Florence sometimes does in her travels (though perhaps she's on planes and buses rather ships, I'm not sure).  This one looks so confident and safe, perfectly matched to the wind and sea.  Each detail is in place for the ship's sail -- and as is the usual in Florence's paintings.

Shannon Bueker "Birdbath" 2-17-13

Shannon Bueker
Acrylic on Canvas, 12 x 12
Original, $160

Playful, these birds splashing merrily in the clear, clean water that someone thoughtfully provided.  I suspect this scene is straight from Shannon's own back yard -- embellished in Shannon's unique movement-evoking painting way.  Of course this very day, the bird bath is probably frozen!

Julia Kennedy "Labradorite Rough" 2-16-13

"Labradorite Rough"
Julia Kennedy
20" x 20" oil on canvas
Original, $500

That fantastic luminescent stone, labradorite, must have been the model for this layered oil painting.  It's one of my favorite stones and Julia has captured the nuances of the kind of oil-slick surprising iridescence very well.  The best part of labradorite is that it looks so different as you turn the stone in your hand -- or look at it in different lighting.  I think the same is true of this painting.  Amazing work, Julia!

Rita Baldwin " Red Roses" 2-14-13

"Red Roses"
Rita Baldwin
Oil Painting, 11" x 14" framed

I saved this post to the Daily Jewel for Valentine's Day as it certainly is something I to contemplate on this day dedicated to LOVE, and I hope you will enjoy it too.  "Red Roses" is a stunning vibrant painting showing the sweet dazzle (yes - I think it's both) of this fragrant flower.    Rita has a way of layering the oil paint to give a luminous lit-from-within texture.  I attribute a dreamlike, reverent quality to her work which makes my eyes go soft and a smile creep into my face.       ~ Mariah Wheeler
