Brooks "Sea Scarf" 3-29-13

          I was looking at this fabulous scarf of Brooks' yesterday and marveling about it's ethereal beauty and wondering how it was made.  Then I found out that Brooks has a blog, stuffbybrooks.blogspot.com, and low and behold this very scarf was described there.  Here is what she says about it:

It may be hard to tell what this is. It is a summery kind of ethereal sea foam scarf. It has shimmery green-blue ribbon with silver overtones and eyelash yarn the same colors going length wise, white lace goes across at intervals and then it is sewn in both directions on the machine. It is long and makes a generous shawl, scarf or overlay on a skirt. I was so excited when I learned how to do this - it is so easy. It is the stabilizer that makes it possible. You lay out your design on the stabilizer and then cover it with another piece of stabilizer in order to sew on the machine and have it keep its shape. Spray adhesive helps it not move around. I like the water soluble stabilizer because it all washes out so easily.  Instant gratification is highly valued in my world and this does it.

        It's not easy to see it on this photograph, but the round brown "fruits" are made from actual coffee beans adding even more dimension to this wax painting.  Andrea uses hair dyes, crayons and a variety of natural coloring agents to the wax to paint her scenes.  Though she hasn't titled it, surely this is a fragrant coffee mug, steamingly inviting.       ~ Mariah Wheeler

      What a beautiful scene, delightfully depicting pairs of more than one kind. There are two swans, close in proximity, yet each facing a different direction. On a Monday

Thanks to Amy Durso, the first pictures have come rolling in from yesterday's Voices and Vision. What an exceptional time we all had. A most intimate experience for such a large group, as one person after another revealed inner feelings, processes, and experiences. Laughter and tears emerged as visual and vocal artist met on the common ground of their art.

          This painting is full of shimmer and magic!  Star Catcher dances reverently among the vines, holding her precious star in front of her, bathed in moonlight.  She seems to be dancing on air and I get the feeling she could just float up to the sky any minute to place the star -- or is that she is just descending with this treasure!  I'm certain that Sarah has all the details of a great tale to tell about Star Catcher.

          I love how this painting so perfectly portrays the feel and scent of lavender!  The scent seems to waft outward as the flower fronds wave at you from their perch.  This encaustic medium used on the center panel is vibrant and dimensional, adding to the background scene as a close-up.

           Seldom am I at a loss for words when viewing a painting, but this one by Nancy Smith, puts me in a wordless place, viewing the crow and reflection and seeing the balance and possibly why Nancy named this piece as she did.  I wonder if she had in mind a balancing of her soul before she painted or if the images evoked this on their own.  I wonder this even before I notice that the reflection is "right" side up while the crow is "upside" down.   ???    Fascinating!  I'd like to see this in my bathroom next to the mirror where I apply makeup and comb my hair.  I'd have a perplexed look on my face every day -- as if I don't already.          ~ Mariah Wheeler
