          Emma Skurnick has put a wonderful vibrant variety of life in this portrait of the Spirit of the Haw River.  She included a face from her husband's puppet that was created for the Paperhand Puppet Intervention, a spotted salamander, two kinds of water beetles, a school of fish, some wonderful plant life and even a dragonfly.  Of course there is a catfish peering at us from the depths.  The whole thing spirals and flows on it's grand mission to the sea -- just like our Haw.              ~  Mariah
