Vangi Cathcart "A Good Place for Hunting & Fishing" at the Joyful Jewel 7-31-13

"A Good Place for Hunting & Fishing"
Vangi Cathcart
Ink and Watercolor, 12" x 22", Framed, Original
$100

Using her extensive training as a Sumi-e water color artist, Vangi Cathcart has created a pictoral presentation of what must be inspired by  North Carolina!  Although it likely came from a traditional Oriental saying, it certainly applies to Summer & Fall activities we love right here in our own lovely state.  I think I see the fish biting in the pond -- let's go!

Florence Johnson "Poppies on Yupo Paper" at the Joyful Jewel 7-30-13

"Poppies on Yupo Paper"
Florence Johnson
10" x 10" watercolor & ink, framed original
$25

The painting of brilliant red poppies is created with a new technique for Florence Johnson.  She described the process of watercolor on yupo paper's slick surface, and how it gives the painting a  dreamy look.  The colors run just a little bit blurring the edges to soften the overall image.  Certainly the colors are just as vivid as ever.  I think that the composition of these flouncy, extroverted poppies shows off Florence's flair as much as the flowers themselves. It's a happy painting with lots of movement and a sense of joy.                              ~ Mariah

"Two-Piece Collander"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Pottery, ` 8 1/2" diameter x 4 1/4" + Tray
$35

The Pelzels have created a bowl perfect for blueberries or other fruit.  You can wash the fruit right in the bowl and let the water run out the sieve, then put the bowl on it's tray to catch any extra drainage.  And, how beautiful the blueberries or red cherries will look against the creamy green of the bowl!  There are even handles to so you can pass the bowl around the table, or easily bring it out to the patio for a romantic evening with your sweetie. Such joy from a utilitarian piece of art!

Barbara Damiano "Last Light at Hatteras" at the Joyful Jewel 7-27-13

"Last Light at Hatteras"
Barbara Damiano
Mixed media collage and painting on canvas, 8" x 8", Original
$60

On a unsettled weather night, Barbara Damiano reminds us of the power in the waves of Hatteras Island and the way the light looks when you can't see the sun because of the clouds, but know it is ready to set in the western sky.  Some of this collage is painted directly onto the canvas, other of it is bits of paper and I'm not sure what else to compose this dramatic scene.  Art at it's imaginative best, giving an undeniable impression with no need for all of the details.                              ~  Mariah Wheeler

Adjustable Adult Sizes, 100% Cotton
$15

Who loves Pittsboro?  I love Pittsboro.  Do you?

Wear this hat with Sharon Blessum's beautiful photograph of the Chatham County Court House in all it's new glory.  Send one to your college-bound son or daughter to remind them of where they came from.  Take one home to your husband after your trip to North Carolina so you'll remember where to bring him back to.  Hang one on your hat rack to admire.  Oh, and, use this hat to shield you from a blindingly sunny day or, on a cloudy day, and to protect your glasses from the rain.

Nancy L Smith "Broody Chicken" at the Joyful Jewel 7-25-13

"Broody Chicken"
Nancy L Smith
Acrylic on Canvas & Mixed Media, 12" x 12"
$100

This colorful Broody Hen of Nancy L Smith's fits the definition I found of what it means to be a broody hen.  Although turned away, she is keeping a keen eye on you -- "Don't even think of taking my eggs," she says.  The colors intensify her point that she means what she says.

Taken from "My Pet Chicken" blog:  Her warning means, "Stay back, this nest is mine for hatching!" Actually, we find it charming when our hens are broody--they are beautiful when they're angry! Once a day or so your hen may emerge from her nest like a whirling dervish: all her feathers will be ruffled out so she will look VERY BIG. She will hold her wings out from her body to give herself even more apparent size.. . . .

Nancy probably knows all about this as she paints the chickens from what she sees in her own backyard!

On a Monday

Here's the thing. A secret most don't know. One of the features of our full-service gallery, on Mondays, is  dream interpetation. Many times, people are inclined to tell me their dreams as they're browsing among these creative walls. Little do they know, dreamwork has been a feature of my lifetime career as therapist and spiritual teacher.

One stranger, moved to tears in our conversation, agreed that I should put up a sign on the sidewalk like Lucy in the Charlie Brown comic strip...something about 'Dream Work  5 cents".

Other times, I've offered a short, subtle reiki moment.

Of course, most important, people receive the pure, unadulterated joy of coming in to see Shuga. Customer and canine alike, melt into a swoon.

To reassure our artists, most all the customers I'm thinking of, also walk out with your work in their hands. Today, a flurry of cards by Shannon, Nancy, and Gerald left the racks.  Emma's plate, DG's opal, Janet's earrings, and other items moved on.

The art of the Joyful Jewel is far surpassing what meets the eye.

Write down your dreams everyone.
They can only come true if you honor them.

Just sayin'
on a Monday,
Sharon and Shuga

DG Chandler "Blouder Opal & Opal" necklace at the Joyful Jewel 7-19-13

"Boulder Opal, Opal & Sterling Silver Necklace"
DG Chandler
$92

As if one truly spectacular Opal wasn't enough, DG Chandler added another smaller, very firey opal to his Sterling Silver design.  The larger Boulder Opal is like a mysterious swirling galaxy or deep intriguing pool of magic.  This piece is hand fabricated and hand stamped, using DG's original stamping tools.  He continued his skillful handwork to make a bail which matches the carved design on the piece using larger strokes.  The necklace is hung from a purchased Sterling Silver rope chain that drapes especially well on the neck.

"Tatanya No. 1"
Steve Clarke
Photograph 20 1/2" x 24", Framed
$250

This dancer is reaching back yet moving forward, and doing it without looking where she is going!  Dancers always seem to be moving in every direction at once and using their bodies in ways that are unexpected.  Also unexpected is Steve Clarke's ability to capture these qualities of movement in a still photograph.  I'm not sure if this dancer has been tattooed, painted or has had the colorful tie-dye like images projected onto her.  Whichever it is, she certainly wears it well!  Inspires me to get up and move.

Martha Johnson "Well Behaved Women . . ." at the Joyful Jewel 7-16-13

"Well-Behaved Women"
Martha Johnson
11 1/2" x 9 1/2", Mixed Media Collage, Original, Framed
$65

Certainly this is true, "Well-behaved women rarely make history," a quote from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, chosen by Martha Johnson as focus and inspiration for this interesting collage.  Grounded by smooth pieces of white gravel, layered with colorful papers and fabrics, and including music (always seems to accompany any kind of revolution!) and a stamp featuring a probably-misbehaving woman, this piece also reminds us that persistence and daring are important aspects for social change.  A foundation of strength and layers of repetition are also usually needed.

There are lots of these daring, radiant and long-time believers in justice, preservation, and compassion, who are leading the Moral Monday protests.  In the eyes of the law they are misbehaving.  With steadiness and persistence, one after the other of these women, are together making a historical impact.

On a Monday

One of the most lovely aspects of the Joyful Jewel community is the gathering of folks for artist receptions, poetry readings, music, other events that bring warm chatter among beautiful art. We seldom post pictures, though Mariah is diligent in photo journaling all such events. Here are a few candids from a recent evening, the reception for Lisa Wright-Taylor.

Sunday, July 14, 2013

Lisa Wright-Taylor "NO H8" at the Joyful Jewel 7-14-13

"NO H8"
Lisa Wright-Taylor
Acrylic, Oil & Mixed Media on Canvas, 16" x 20", Original

This is a fine example of how art affects politics and politics affect art.  First out in affecting societal change are words of protest, then music, followed by written words.  Next in the que for real change comes visual art.  When art comes, so does lasting change!

I think this painting was inspired by:
On November 4, 2008 Proposition 8 passed in California, amending the state Constitution to ban same-sex marriage. The defeat provoked a groundswell of initiative within the GLBT community at a grassroots level, with many new political and protest organizations being formed in response.

The NOH8 Campaign is a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska (
http://www.bouska.net) and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world, with "NOH8" painted on one cheek in protest.

Four years since its inception, the NOH8 Campaign has grown to nearly 30,000 faces and continues to grow at an exponential rate. The campaign began with portraits of everyday Californians from all walks of life and soon rose to include politicians, military personnel, newlyweds, law enforcement, artists, celebrities, and many more.

The NOH8 Campaign has received overwhelming support from around the world, and has appeared in various local and national news programs and publications. The images are widely used on various social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to spread the message of equality. Eventually the images will be compiled for a large-scale media campaign.

Lisa just told me that her title, NO H8 = "No Hate."  What will Lisa paint in response to NC politics of 2013!

Copper Pot & Utensils Wind Chime

Mixed Media ~ 9" x 15"
$45

Beth Shaffer has more fun in life that many of us combined!  I never see her without a BIG smile and a BIG hug.  She shares her joy in her art and everyone smiles at these wind chimes in return.  This one has a stunning copper pot and an especially tinkly brass bell along with an assortment of cutlery and beads hanging from something like a metal doily - (Perhaps one of you knows what this really is).  The whole thing hangs at a jaunty angle and moves with only a slight amount of wind bringing delight and a lilting song.

Carol Owen Watery Scene at the Joyful Jewel 7-10-13

Watery Scene
Carol Owen
9" x 11" Oil Painting Print, Framed
$65

What a mysterious watery scene Carol Owen has painted.  She didn't give this piece a title that I know of, but perhaps it's just as well because it's intriguing enough to imagine what goes on here.  I imagine fairies and shadowy angels quietly watching over a more-colorful-than-I-have-ever-seen swamp.  They are waiting to be noticed and have something to tell us.  Perhaps this paintings came straight out of a dream of Carol's, to make a striking companion piece to one of her Spirit Houses.                    ~ Mariah

On a Monday 7-8-13

Like our homes, the Joyful Jewel holds energy from the experiences that happen within the walls. Since First Sunday yesterday, it seems that stain glass, paintings, pottery, beads, clothing, mobiles, everything,  has more shimmer. No wonder we had a lot of customers and sales this morning, even on a Monday!

On the weekend, many came to enjoy Lisa Wright-Taylor's painting performance and bought some of her featured pieces.  Aja Demettera's song of Vision reverberated in beauty and power. Sharon Blessum's Pittsboro t-shirts and hats were seen walking in the store and down the street. Shoppers and artists mingled. As always, Mariah and DG offered wonderful hospitality to our town and it's artful ways.

C'mon in and feel the joy.

Such a pleasure to be part of it all.
On a Monday,
Sharon

Felted Pouch with Tree
Allison East
Felted Wool with Applique, ~ 4" x 5"

At first, because of the flouncy fringe, you don't see the tree that Allison East has placed on this felted pouch.  When you do see it, the whole pouch takes on a new depth and spirit.  The roots, the purple trunk, the variegated yarns of the canopy, give the fringe something special to frame.  This surprisingly stout-yet-soft drawstring  pouch is begging to be filled with pebbles, gemstones or other treasures one loves to collect and hold dear.

Duckling Plate
Luke Jacks
Pottery and Glazes
$60

Luke Jacks'  plates are made of white clays. The designs are created with underglazes, underglaze pencils and watercolors, then the piece is dipped in a lincoln clear. The plates are microwave, dishwasher and food safe if you'd like to eat from them. Or they can be hung as wall art.  This plate has the cutest-ever duckling "painted" on it.  I imagine it being placed in an honored spot on the mantle or hung the wall in your den, ready to bring a fluttery vibe to the place.

Janet Place "Sparkly Red, White & Blue Earrings" at the Joyful Jewel 7-3-13

"Sparkly Red, White & Blue Earrings"
Janet Place
Polymer Clay
$20
Many people know Janet Place as a musician, well loved for her stunning voice and for her most-fun band, Great Big Gone.  Few perhaps know that she is also a fabulous jewelry maker.  Her pieces are as colorful as her music and as much fun to wear as her band is fun to listen & dance to.  Speaking of dancing, wouldn't these earrings swing and sparkle on the dance floor!

Lisa Garber "Origami Foxes" Earrings at the Joyful Jewel 7-2-13

Origami Foxes
Lisa Garber
Paper, Sterling Silver
$26

Lisa Garber has fashioned the most enchanting foxes from paper and sterling silver wire.  Here is what Lisa says about her art:   I believe no one should suffer for beauty and am always looking for ways to be kinder to people, animals, and the planet.  I use responsible materials for my jewelry as often as possible.  These include but are not limited to repurposed beads and paper, fairly traded stones, upcycled items, and 100% recycled sterling silver.  These guys are made from vintage paper and recycled sterling silver.  I think they are winking at you and inviting you to scamper on to whatever you choose to do.
