"Bottle Tray"
Bob Searles
liter size bottle and fused glass pieces

Art can be both beautiful and useful like this bottle tray with fused glass and berries that Bob Searles made.  I can see it with a mixture of red and black olives and a tiny spoon.  Or, you could put it on your dresser to hold keys and watch for the night and make them so easy to find in your morning grogginess!

A holiday is coming - time to read a new mystery by Judy Hogan with just the right twist for Thanksgiving dinner.  "Farm Fresh and Fatal" is a who-dunnit set in a Farmer's Market where an unpopular poultry agent has been poisoned, apparently after drinking fruit punch provided by the market manager. Absorbing reading for a cold cold evening.

Barbara Thompson "Rock Filled Candle Holder" at the Joyful Jewel 11-19-14

"Rock Filled Candle Holder"
Barbara Thompson
~ 4" x 12", Mixed Media Sculpture

Isn't this clever!  Barbara Thompson has made a candle holder, complete with battery-powered candle) out of re-cycled glass components and filled the middle with lovely smooth river rocks.  Would make a nice centerpiece of dining table, maybe with a few cedar fronds around the bottom.  It is weighted just right so that it won't tip over.

Forrest Greenslade "Windswept" at the Joyful Jewel 11-18-14

Forrest Greenslade
~ 12" x 12" modeling clay, patina on metal flake and acrylic paint

This beautiful "painting" by Forrest Greenslade sold the day after I took its picture.  I certainly understand why it as chosen.  This combination of modeling clay, patina on metal flake making part of the coloring and acrylic paint makes a unique and balanced piece of art.  Important in this case as the tree needs all the help it can get to balance on a precipice and hold strong against the fierce wind and lightening.  What a dramatic scene of strength within and without!

Bruce Saunders "Untitled Mandala" at the Joyful Jewel 11-17-14

Untitled Mandala
Bruce Saunders
12" x 12" Giclee Print on Canvas, stretched over board frame

As November's featured artist at the Joyful Jewel, Bruce Saunders, has a whole extra wall of his art to share.  Bruce doesn't name his work, so we can use our imaginations to decide what is being depicted.  I say this one is "Ancient Monk's Vivid Dream" as the center is like a sand painting that I have seen monks do.  These focus on the centerpoint and depict the walls of a holy place, just as this one seems to do.  Next outer from the center is an energy vortex taking us into the bright energizing dream. What do you see in this image?

Gerald O. Dukes

Up close and asking "Whatcha Doin'?" I love the detail that Gerald Dukes gets in his photography.  You can even see the detritus on the intricate spiraling.  And how interesting that one snail is standing up.  Perfect focus combined with soft background.  Good job Gerald!

Gina Boyle "Music" at the Joyful Jewel 11-5-14

Gina Boyle
Collage of Pottery, Glass & Found Objects, 7" x 7"

Here is what new Joyful Jewel artist, Gina Boyle, says about her art - and I think she means it!:

My mixed media mosaics combine my own handmade tiles (all of the the quotation, word & sculptural tiles) with fine china, stained glass, mirror, beads, vintage jewelry, found objects & more. The combination makes a bold blend of color, texture, and ideas.

The mosaics are one-of-a-kind and eclectic, but my goal is to make art that is more than merely decorative. I hope the the words, images, and ideas spark conversation and provide a concrete, 'out loud' representation of your beliefs, values and hopes, inspiring you to be true to yourself.
