Danielle du Clos "Record Mandala" at the Joyful Jewel 4-29-15

Record Mandala
Danielle du Clos
phonograph record with acrylic paint!

Here is the story of how Danielle began making these intricate designs, each one hand painted without use of a ruler or compass!:  I began painting these records with oils and acrylics when a neighbor asked me to take his old records and spare them from the landfill. I love working and playing with the circle, inviting a bit of chaos in as I gradually find balance. As a musician and nature-lover (soon to be farmer) I enjoy discovering new rhythms and watching these records blossom with a new life.

Erin Dail "Fiesta Necklace" at the Joyful Jewel 4-21-15

"Fiesta Necklace"
Erin Dail
Glass Beads with Sterling Silver Wire

Erin Dail crochets with wire and has really outdone herself with this Fiesta Necklace!  It is so chock full of beautiful torch-made glass beads and red pepper like pieces that you almost want to eat it.  Of course would be just as fun to wear it to a party and dance dance dance.

Tamera Cooke "Mandala Star" at the Joyful Jewel 4-18-15

Mandala Star
Tamera Cooke

Words from Tamera:
I have always danced to my own rhythms and have often felt more “unique” than I wanted to be.  This was difficult to accept as an adolescent, but I have begun to appreciate, and even celebrate, seeing the world through these eyes.

Through my work I try to play a small part in transitioning this divided and chaotic world toward a planet full of acceptance, love and unity.  I actually see the creation of my art as a form of worship.  I try to pull inspiration from the Source of our Oneness when I am in the process of creating and try to breathe that energy into each of my pieces.  If I can make something that moves someone to feel a small sense of peace, or brings a bit of joy to their heart, then my life as an artist is a life well spent.

Linda Collura "Butterfly Fairy" at the Joyful Jewel 4-17-15

Butterfly Fairy
Linda Collura
Ceramic

Who out there doesn't love a fairy and a butterfly?  Linda Collura chose both subjects in this full-of-life small sculpture. Life would be so grand for her in a beautiful flower garden or patio display.   Here is what she says about her work: "I use low fire earthenware with underglazes, glazes and lusters layered to create textures and feeling of depth with various handbuilding techniques. It's fun to imagine the characters that emerge once I begin creating a tile, bowl, sculpture, or any kind of garden art. "

Steve Clarke "Lauren Brown" at the Joyful Jewel 4-16-15

"Lauren Brown"
Steve Clarke
Framed Piece, Original Photograph
$250

Since becoming involved with photography in 1995, Steve Clarke has worked with dancers in action, practitioners of yoga, athletes, and performers generally.  He considers his approach interactive rather than documentary—that is, his images involve collaboration and improvisation with the subject rather than documentation of previously-composed action.  Clarke is particularly interested in exploration and discovery on the subject’s part, stimulated by the presence of the camera and the feedback and perspective that it provides.  He is currently experimenting with the photographic process as a means of developing dance pieces for performance.  He also organizes and produces a series of dance concerts called “Multiple Exposure.”

In recent years, Clarke’s work has been shown in various locations including the National Museum of Dance, Duke University, Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Winter Light Gallery (Greensboro NC), Las Vegas Art League (Las Vegas NM), Halle Cultural Arts Center (Apex NC), Gateway Gallery (Winston-Salem NC), Litmus Gallery (Raleigh NC), FrameWorks Gallery (Raleigh NC), Through This Lens Gallery (Durham NC), and Lexington Art League (Lexington KY).  Clarke’s exhibits often are accompanied by performances of the dancers who are his subjects.  His book of dance photographs, Seeing While Being Seen, was published in 2004 by the National Dance Association.  More work can be seen on the websitehttp://www.bigjumpsite.com.  A book of yoga photographs, also to be published by the NDA, is in preparation for 2012.

Laurie Chapman "Summer Wrap" at the Joyful Jewel 4-14-15

Summer Wrap
Laurie Chapman

What Laurie Chapman says about her wraps and hats:
I use a variety of yarns from synthetic to wool. Most of my hats are my own designs, although some are from patterns I've found through the years. All my pieces are made with love and lots of good intention.

I first started knitting at the age of 6 with my grandma. I put it away for many years and started up again in my 30's. Knitting is a meditative sport for me.

Vangi Cathcart "Plum Blossom Tree" at the Joyful Jewel 4-11-15

"Plum Blossom Tree"
Vangi Cathcart
9" x 11" original, matted & framed to 18" x 14"
$65

Vangi Cathcart, has interesting information about "Plum Blossom Tree": The plum blossom represents winter because in Asia it often blooms in February, before spring arrives.  In colder climates it's not unusual to receive a last snowfall while the plum blossoms are in full bloom.  Plum blossom personifies austerity.  A plum blossom painting usually includes a main branch, a secondary branch, flowers and small branches.  The sumi-e artist uses the side stroke, the pulling stroke , and the smashing stroke.  The main branch is painted first, then the flowers followed by the smaller branches and the stems connecting the flowers to the branches."

Donna Cassidy "Plush Spring Scarf" at the Joyful Jewel 4-10-15

Donna Cassidy
Plush Spring Scarf

I have a background in painting and printmaking, but have always been drawn to crafts. Currently I am going in two very different craft directions. I am working in fused and stained glass for 34 years. I love this medium, but I needed to work in something I could shape directly and that was soft. So, for about 4 years, I have been working in freeform crochet as well. Freeform is loosely defined as crochet that doesn't use  a pattern. It is a much more painterly approach.

Deborah Younglao "Color-Dancing on Silk" at the Joyful Jewel 4-9-15

"Color-Dancing on Silk" Wrap
Deborah Younglao
Any Size, $84

Debora Younglao is a silk painter who loves to work with color in her exquisitely adorned scarves, all of which are light weight enough for Spring. She has tied this larger one in such a flattering way that I am calling it a wrap. And, wrap it would be on a day at the movies or luncheon where the air conditioning makes for a cold chill.  Together with a simple white dress or pants and halter top, this wrap can bring focus to a flirty style and a night of dancing.  Here is some of what Deborah says on the tag about silk: "The transparent dyes don't just cover the surface but actually become part of the fabric, allowing the texture and luminosity of the silk to show through."
