Anora McGaha "The Blessing" at the Joyful Jewel 5-31-15

"The Blessing"
Anora McGaha
Book

I have read this book by Anora Sutherland McGaha and today am remembering someone I lost recently and my dear friend who lost him too. A death is a life-changing event for the one who is left. Anora's story is a fairy tale about healing and grief, written to give real attention and compassion to a feeling that often gets brushed aside, especially when the loss if of a pet and the one who is left is a child.  Of course this can be true for adults as well as children -- there is a wish for the grief to subside before it's time. In the book, a child who has been overcome with grief is listened to and helped with sweetness and power to move back in to her life. The emotion's cause and circumstances are not exactly defined, but the feeling is, and in a way that deepens the experience for the reader. Would be a great book for any age person who has lost a pet, who has moved away from good friends, or in any situation where deep understanding and a kind of magic are necessary for a person to move on.  "The Blessing" by Anora Sutherland [McGaha)], Book, 19 pages

Sarah Froeber "Molly Learns to Say Mine" at the Joyful Jewel 5-30-15

"Molly Learns to Say Mine"
Sarah Froeber
book

With an MA in Child Psychology and over 40 years working with children in theater and workshops, Sarah Froeber has the education and experience to write a book about boundaries for children.  Sweet Molly of "Molly Learns to Say Mine" learns her lesson through the kind of trial and error we all know so well.  The story is enchantingly illustrated by artist Terri Lange.  Here is Sarah's description of the book:

Molly is a perky third grader who intends to be generous in every way. Not understanding the concept of boundaries, she makes a promise to herself to always share her time, her possessions and her space. But things quickly get out of hand; and Molly learns to say "mine" when it is appropriate to do so. Written in charming verse with delightful sketches by the enormously talented Terri Lange, Molly Learns To Say Mine will tickle the funny bone and cause children and adults to re-examine their own boundary issues.

Gasoline Stove at the Joyful Jewel 5-29-15

Gasoline Stove
cd

Including all original music, Gasoline Stove's cd is not "your grandmother's" music though it is described as "Americana."  You might guess from the title that the songs are varied and about mostly unusual subjects.  These are Scott Morgan's thoughts and visions flowing without punctuation (no periods).  From the title track "Vultures on the Mainframe" : I've seen the vultures dig a man out of his grave Clean him up and make him walk like he was straight . . ."   Here is a more common subject, still with uncommon images, from "Much": Oh me oh my let it rain come inside She takes comfort in knowing that my soul has not died When the timbers quake and the hours do sing You know the wind blows my heart back to you . . ."

From the Gasoline Stove website:  Gasoline Stove is a timeless five piece band, mixing old country, folk, gospel, americana, rock and roots together to create dramatic but playful blues ballads. Rousing harmonies, accordion, piano and a slapping upright bass lead this storytelling extravaganza.

I first heard this band, playing original music, lyrical story telling really, at Johnny's in Carrboro several years ago and have been a fan though don't get out to hear them often.  Next up for them is The Roost on Thursday June 4, 5 - 8pm and then later in June they will be back at City Tap and then at Saxapahaw.

Mary Darley "Off Shore" at the Joyful Jewel 5-28-15

"Off Shore"
Mary Darley

Mary Darley, the daughter and granddaughter of illustrators for National Geographic Magazine, is a painter who includes the action and drama of nature in her paintings.  This one, titled "Off Shore" of a Great Blue Heron who caught a Catfish -- probably too big to swallow! -- is no exception.  Can't you just feel and smell the muggy swampy water, imagine the clam peeking out of it's shell to see what is the commotion, and feel the gentle breeze ruffling water and waving reeds?

"Star Child"
Kay Goldstein
Novel

Kay Goldstein's first novel reaffirms life, even when it is difficult.Terra and Marius are 'star children' on their way to being human. 'There are no vampires or evil forces, only the challenges that we as humans must face: our fears, our shame, our wanting to be loved. There are also magical events in the book that remind us that there are bigger things at work in our lives, things that we may not understand but that have a loving,  supportive presence.'

Kitchen Pot Hanger
Ches Stewart
Cast Iron and Steel
$225

Among the various coat rack and single hooks, is this exceptional hand-forged hanger for pots in the kitchen made by blacksmith Ches Stewart.  I envision the glint of copper bottomed pans but any pot would look great hanging from this Renaissance-style rack.  A pot at the ready and calling for your chicken & dumplings or stir fry vegetables fit for a Knight in Shining Armor or Lady Heroine.  Let the games begin!

Amanda Egdorf-Sand "Porcelain Teardrop Earrings" at the Joyful Jewel 5-19-15

Porcelain Teardrop Earrings
Amanda Egdorf-Sand
Ceramic and  metal with Sterling Silver ear wires

Marrying the delicacy of a porcelain teardrop with coppery metal, Amanda Egdorf-Sand has presented the light and the dark together, kind of a yin and yang alchemy.  I think the metal pieces are an Oriental symbol.  Does anyone know?  I wonder if Amanda thought of this balance when she made these earrings.

Fish
Phyllis Fleming
Steel
~ 2 1/2' wide

This large 2 1/2' wide fish designed and welded by Phyllis Fleming, can stand in nicely for the one that got away!  Anybody want to guess what kind of fish it is?

Per Phyllis:
I'm a metal artist, preferring to use materials some might call junk, and repurpose them. I let the metal speak to me. No specific plans
to start. I let the pieces grow. I'm a beekeeper and have been known to ferment honey and to make mead. I make wine. I'm a musician and have played at the Joyful Jewel.

Blue Vase
Debbie Englund

Shapely and so appealing with it's swirls of rich and creamy earth tones and its squarish handle, this pitcher by Debbie Englund would be perfect for just enough iced tea, a couple of glasses each for two.  The design makes it balanced both visually and in use with a handle sized for your whole hand and a deep spout that would trap the biggest pieces of ice while letting small ones pass through.  Let's go out on the patio together now!

Sheila Fleming "Blessings Altar" at the Joyful Jewel 5-12-15

"Blessings Altar"
Sheila Fleming
Mixed Media Magnet in an Altoid Box

My ALTARS are miniature shrines using objects, symbols and words as an expression of my desire to create sacred space combined with my obsession with small things.  During my last trip to Mexico, I fell in love with the little "nichos", or altars, that sit on tables, hang on walls, or are set in little niches in walls.  Although nichos throughout Latin America are usually based in Roman Catholicism, mine include gods, goddesses and icons from many faiths. Some of my altars are made using tins I brought back from Mexico.

My signature "portable" altars start with recycled Altoids (breath mint) tins, which are covered and collaged in decorative papers, then adorned with found objects. Each altar features a devotional image of some sort, as well as a collection of mini-prayer cards or words of inspiration.

Stained Glass Lotus
Donna Cassidy
Glass & Solder

My favorite flower gets a beautiful setting in stained glass by Donna Cassidy.  The bloom is surrounded by shimmery iridescent nearly-sheer glass and a multi-shade green border.  The deep purple petals form the outside and after the hundred-petals going toward the one, the inside is a luminous lotus heart. Exquisite!

Mary Darley "Off Shore" at the Joyful Jewel 5-1-15

"Off Shore"
Mary Darley

In this piece Mary shows her advanced illustrative skill along with a keen eye for the drama of nature.

Mary Darley was born in Bethesda, Md just outside Washington DC. Both her father and grandfather were chief cartographers at the National Geographic Society. At an early age, Mary was exposed to culture and nature. As soon as she was old enough, she would travel to work with her father and visit the local galleries on her own. She found great comfort and inspiration as the artwork she most admired appeared to look back at her.
