"Well-Behaved Women"
Martha Johnson
11 1/2" x 9 1/2", Mixed Media Collage, Original, Framed
$65
Certainly this is true, "Well-behaved women rarely make history," a quote from Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, chosen by Martha Johnson as focus and inspiration for this interesting collage. Grounded by smooth pieces of white gravel, layered with colorful papers and fabrics, and including music (always seems to accompany any kind of revolution!) and a stamp featuring a probably-misbehaving woman, this piece also reminds us that persistence and daring are important aspects for social change. A foundation of strength and layers of repetition are also usually needed.
There are lots of these daring, radiant and long-time believers in justice, preservation, and compassion, who are leading the Moral Monday protests. In the eyes of the law they are misbehaving. With steadiness and persistence, one after the other of these women, are together making a historical impact.
