There is still time to get steaks or salmon on the grill for tonight.  This pepper grinder on the picnic table will give an extra dose of freshness to the meal.  Of all the grinders Orlan Johnson has made, I like this one the best for it's darker and wood and copper-colored mechanism.  The swirls in the wood accent the movement of the handle.  Watch out you don't get too much pepper while admiring these things!

This organic-shaped bowl by Orlan Johnson was carved from a plum tree burl. Orlan says: "A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner.  A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. . . Burls yield a very peculiar and highly figured wood, prized for its beauty and rarity. . . ."  It reminds all me of the saying "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger" - and I believe, in most cases it also makes you more beautiful! -- just as the injury has done for this piece of wood.

Heartwood - Wow!  Orlan Johnson brought even more life to this purple bowl truly honoring the tree it was.  I do appreciate art that can be used but in this case, I think it best to mount this piece on the wall so you can appreciate every whorl highlighted by the expert sanding and finishing and the round perfection of the circle and curve.

What fun to use a large ( 15 1/4" diameter) cutting board like this one by Orlan Johnson. Get out your best knife and chop away.  The lamination and sanding are perfectly smooth so you can make excellent slices. There is even a slight recess and lip around the edge to catch the juice of fruit or meat. Just don't cut your finger as you count the many different types of wood.

Since someone just now asked, "What is a seam ripper?" I thought to feature this handy tool made by woodworker Orlan Johnson today.  When he first brought a few of these into the Joyful Jewel I mentioned that no one would know what they were.  I was wrong.  A lot of folks, apparently, still sew.  And they are certainly happy to have this tool with its easy to hold handle ready to rip out errant seams.  It works on those that make your pants too short, when you need to let the waist out a little, or when you need to remove just a few stitches to change direction.  Beautiful to look at and of great utility -- what more could we want from a tool. Good job Orlan!
