The stained glass fish series came about as
a result of visiting a Louis Tiffany exhibit in Florida. In reading the
history of how Tiffany did designs and sketches and then supervised the workmen
in constructing the pieces was fascinating. We found that he was very
particular about key pieces within a project and would cut up a large piece of
stained glass to get the one piece he was looking for.
In our early years of doing stained glass we did traditional
pieces and used the leftover scraps to do mosaic projects. We
decided to use copper wire to form the frame of the pieces and did cats, dogs,
mermaids and fish. The fish caught on in a gift shop we were working
with in Florida and after seeing the concept that Tiffany used, we decided to
try “finding the fish” in pieces of stained glass and incorporating the large
pieces into the wire frame instead of scraps. These one-of-a-kind fish
have been a hit ever since 1997.
We enhanced the fish and added a three dimensional eye using coordinated color glass nuggets; used iridescent ribbed glass to simulate the fins; and developed a “lure” using a fishhook, a handmade coordinated color bead and other beads to show the theme of the piece “the one that got away”. We added the hanger using fish line and lure swivels.
Later we developed two smaller versions of these fish and have combined several different size fish into an 18 X 24 inch copper pipe frame along with stained glass seaweed to represent a snapshot of fish in the sea.
