Kate Ladd "Drowning in Words" at the Joyful Jewel 8-5-15

"Drowning in Words"
Kate Ladd
Acrylic and Mixed Media Collage

The first thing I thought about in reading Kate Ladd's title, "Drowning in Word" is that music can take the place of words.  Yet as I looked closely in the collage there are pages from old songbooks as well as from an old dictionary mixed in among, a full-overly full--brain, and pictures of philosophers and so much more.  The drowning may be from too much thinking and I can certainly understand the perils in that.  What a great reminder to slow down, to parse down words and thinking to what one really wants to say or peruse, and even to encourage music to it's jazzy no-word flittings.  From one avid reader and music lover to another, Kate, I see that spacious silence and dreamy nothingness is calling.

Kate Ladd "Poppies & Dragonflies" at the Joyful Jewel 8-6-14

"Poppies and Dragonflies"
Kate Ladd
Acrylic, 8" x 16" Original on Canvas
$110

Two of my favorite things, Kate Ladd has chosen to paint -- poppies and luminous blue dragonflies.  Dragonflies always remind me of magic and fairies and these especially evoke that whispy fluttering.  The poppy leave seem to be waving their encouragement for the magic to begin and of course the poppies are laughing in delight.

Kate Ladd "Witch with Blue Hair" at the Joyful Jewel 10-27-13

"Witch With Blue Hair"
Kate Ladd
Acrylic on board, 10" x 15"
$35, Original

Kate Ladd will be working at the Joyful Jewel all day on October 31st.  I wonder if she will come in blue hair to go with the witch hat I think she is planning to wear.  Although those two things may be on this witch and also on Kate, that is where the two comparisons end!  Kate is much mellower and prettier, and I can't imagine her sporting a spider on her shoulder!

Kate Ladd

19 1/2" x 19 1/2" Octagon Wood with Acrylic Painting

Kate Ladd has painted these bright cheerful sunflowers right on a tray, a tray with handles.  Wouldn't this be a perfect delivery vehicle for a plate of scrambled eggs, sour dough toast and a slice of bacon -- oh, yes and even place a small vase with a single yellow flower on the tray?  I see breakfast in bed coming!  DG, can we buy this tray?

Kate Ladd Sunflower Gourd Bird House at the Joyful Jewel 5-22-13

"Sunflower Gourd Bird House"

Kate Ladd

~6" x 10" plus hanger, Gourd, Paint, Raffia

$40

Inspired by her featured month at the Joyful Jewel, Kate Ladd continued her love of sunflowers by painting several gourds to use as bird houses.  They made such a fun whimsical addition to her sunflower paintings, hanging merrily in the window.  Each one is painted a different color; this yellow one is my favorite and surely would be a favorite for a Carolina Wren, Blue Bird or other small bird.  Gourds make durable and practical containers -- and houses!

$45, Original

I'm hungry aren't you?  Of course, as DG (my husband, Sunday morning cook) knows, this is my favorite breakfast, captured in all it's lusciousness by Kate.  The colors on the original are brighter than this photograph and it's quite a cheerful scene.    ~ Mariah
