Sheila Fleming "Blessings Altar" at the Joyful Jewel 5-12-15

"Blessings Altar"
Sheila Fleming
Mixed Media Magnet in an Altoid Box

My ALTARS are miniature shrines using objects, symbols and words as an expression of my desire to create sacred space combined with my obsession with small things.  During my last trip to Mexico, I fell in love with the little "nichos", or altars, that sit on tables, hang on walls, or are set in little niches in walls.  Although nichos throughout Latin America are usually based in Roman Catholicism, mine include gods, goddesses and icons from many faiths. Some of my altars are made using tins I brought back from Mexico.

My signature "portable" altars start with recycled Altoids (breath mint) tins, which are covered and collaged in decorative papers, then adorned with found objects. Each altar features a devotional image of some sort, as well as a collection of mini-prayer cards or words of inspiration.

Sheila Fleming "Blissful Altar" at the Joyful Jewel 2-1-15

Bliss Altar
Sheila Fleming
Mixed Media Sculpture in a Box

Shelia Fleming made an altar in an old Altoid box, attached a magnet on the back, and dedicated it to Bliss.  Inside are a few special treasures including Kuan Yin in in pagoda and a matchbox full of inspirational words which are on their own magnets.  Since the photograph here doesn't show the words well, here they are (an example of sayings and words inside the match box):

"You are far from the end of your journey.

The way is not in the sky.

The way is in the heart.

See how you love.

Sheila Fleming "Crystal & Sterling Silver Earrings" at the Joyful Jewel 6-13-14

"Blue, Green & Pink Crystal Earrings with Sterling Silver"
Sheila Fleming
~ 2 1/2" from top of dangle, Sterling Silver French Hooks
$40

I had these extra sparkly crystal and silver earrings by Sheila Fleming ready to go on the blog today.  They must have known it and were ready to show off  because they found their new home this very day!  Just as I did, the patron loved the three colors and the shaped and hammered sterling silver spirals.  The spirals and dangle make these earrings the perfect length to tickle your neck and to spin just enough to catch the light brilliantly.

Sheila Fleming "Bliss" at the Joyful Jewel 3-15-14

"Bliss"
Sheila Fleming
when open 4 3/4" x 4"
$38

This sweet altar to Love by Sheila Fleming includes just enough words to convey the message of "Live Laugh Love", surely the path to "Bliss" which is the title she gave the piece.  To further illustrate, Sheila says on the card in a quote from Sri Chinmoy:

To make oneself

Every day

An object of total

dedication

&

surrender

is the highest form

of bliss

The altar is a magnet and made from a recycled Altoid box.  Inside the little envelope are tiny poems with titles  "A Prayer of Oneness," Healing Chant," and "Cherished Prayer" to pull out and read whenever you need more inspiration in achieving "Bliss."

Shelia Fleming "Jewelry" and Brooksie Edwards "Fused Glass" at the Joyful Jewel 12-17-13

Jewelry and Fused Glass
by Sheila Fleming and Brooksie Edwards

Red is the color of the holiday season -- and also of passion and fun.  These two creations embody all of this!  My goodness who wouldn't feel sexy wearing Shelia Fleming's fabulous ruby red and silver earring baubles, and who could help but smile taking a piece of candy off the street-scape/Christmas ornament-bubbling scene on Brooksie Edwards' jaunty fused glass plate.  Let loose, have a little fun!

Sheila Fleming "Hope" Altar at the Joyful Jewel 9-28-13

"Hope" Altar

Shelia Fleming

Mixed Media in an Altoid Box

$48

Here is one of the new altars that Sheila Fleming has made.  I especially like this one with the Mary Oliver quote.  Inside the little "purse" are more inspiring writings on the topic "Hope."  On the back is a magnet so you can have lots of reminders of the quest for Hope and Amazement.
