Jerry Fowler "Tea Pot" at the Joyful Jewel 3-4-14

Tea Pot
Jerry Fowler
Ceramic, ~8" x 5" + Bamboo Handle
$75

Wouldn't a steaming cup of tea be nice just now.  Jerry Fowler knows just how to take the ice and cold away.  I don't know if this is a Chinese Teapot -- it's what Jerry said he would be making.  I love the shades and luminosity of the glazing and the bulbous long nose of a spout on this one. Also important, the recessed lid should stay on well as you pour out the last drop into your Jerry Fowler mug!    Last on Jerry's blog  he said he was working on more teapots.  So we will have our pick of size, shape and colors soon.

SusanG. Luster "Pine Clock" at the Joyful Jewel 10-5-13

Longleaf Pine Ceramic Clock
Susan G. Luster
Ceramic, ~ 9" x 13 1/2"
$48

Here is something completely new from Susan Luster -- a ceramic clock.  Surely the longleaf pine design will help you with time.  When you want more time, just gaze at the whole fern until you lose track of time.  When you want time to go by faster, focus on the individual needles as if you are holding each one individually and counting each one.  Makes sense to me.  Does it to you?

Jerry Fowler "Blue Bud Vase" at the Joyful Jewel 9-16-13

"Blue Bud Vase"
Jerry Fowler
Ceramic, ~ 4 1/4" x 7"
$25

Jerry Fowler has created an interesting vase with many shades of blue and a texture that isn't strong to your touch, but encourages you to look deeply into the sheen.  It's kind of like laying on your back in the summer grass, finding pictures in the stars.  For this you'd want daylight rather than darkness.  You could put this vase on a table a little ways away, at eye level, and let yourself get lost in the images you find as you gaze at it.

Susan G Luster "Wall Pocket" at the Joyful Jewel 8-10-13

Ceramic Wall Pocket
Susan G Luster
Ceramic Wall Vase, ~ 3 1/2" x 7"
$25

Susan G Luster is always coming up with something new to bring in.  This hanging vase is an example of her continuing creativity.  Susan uses real leaves from her yard and garden to make the impressions in the clay, firing them along with the clay.  Then she paints the glazing to mimic the color of the now ash leaf.  This piece was hand formed and hangs from a leather cord and large glass bead.

Owl Bowl
Pam Epperson
Pottery, 7" diameter x ~ 4"
$24

In this flecked oatmeal colored bowl, Pam Epperson has created the perfect bowl for your morning oatmeal.  The flecks on the outside mimic the look of seeds and raisins within.  This wise and wide-awake owl will do as much as the coffee to bring bright-eyed cheer to the morning!

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel "2-Piece Collander" at the Joyful Jewel 7-28-13

"Two-Piece Collander"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Pottery, ` 8 1/2" diameter x 4 1/4" + Tray
$35

The Pelzels have created a bowl perfect for blueberries or other fruit.  You can wash the fruit right in the bowl and let the water run out the sieve, then put the bowl on it's tray to catch any extra drainage.  And, how beautiful the blueberries or red cherries will look against the creamy green of the bowl!  There are even handles to so you can pass the bowl around the table, or easily bring it out to the patio for a romantic evening with your sweetie. Such joy from a utilitarian piece of art!

Luke Jacks "Duckling Plate" at the Joyful Jewel 7-5-13

Duckling Plate
Luke Jacks
Pottery and Glazes
$60

Luke Jacks'  plates are made of white clays. The designs are created with underglazes, underglaze pencils and watercolors, then the piece is dipped in a lincoln clear. The plates are microwave, dishwasher and food safe if you'd like to eat from them. Or they can be hung as wall art.  This plate has the cutest-ever duckling "painted" on it.  I imagine it being placed in an honored spot on the mantle or hung the wall in your den, ready to bring a fluttery vibe to the place.

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel "Free Form Bowl" at the Joyful Jewel 6-6-13

"Free Form Bowl"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Pottery, ~ 6" x 4"
$25

HP and Sandra Pelzel told me that this bowl was formed around a balloon!  The design was carved into the clay and then the piece was laid around the balloon.  As the clay hardened, the balloon was popped and the shape was further worked until the makers were happy with the free form shape.  I love the funny, lilting shape they decided on.  Seems just right that the natural clay color is offset with darker highlights and muted green interior.

Shannon Bueker "Birds in Grass" ceramic wall piece at the Joyful Jewel 5-18-13

"Birds in Grass"
Shannon Bueker
ceramic wall piece, ~ 9" x 14"
$125
Known so well for her vibrant animal watercolor paintings, Shannon Bueker is less known for her pottery even though I think she's been doing it on the side for a long time.  You can see the same type of nature scene here, with all of the sense of movement in the grass and similar colors as you might find in one of Shannon's paintings.  Yet here it is gracing a three dimensional good-sized wall hanging.

Susan Luster "Terra Cotta Fern" at the Joyful Jewel 5-5-13

"Terra Cotta Fern" Wall Hanging
Susan G. Luster
ceramic, glaze, reclaimed wood - 9 1/2" x 18"
$70
This gorgeous fern, memorialized on Susan G. Luster's terra cotta pottery, and then mounted on a reclaimed piece of barn wood, is just asking to take it's place on a nature-lover's wall.  Susan has an unusual way of creating her pottery using slab and hand building techniques.  As you might guess, much of her inspiration for making and decorating pottery comes from the plant world. Each piece has leaves pressed into the clay before it is fired. The plant material is removed, leaving an impression that is enhanced with glaze or underglaze, making them appear to be alive in the clay after they are fired.
