HP & Sandra Pelzel "Tooth Fairy Box" at the Joyful Jewel 6-25-14

"Tooth Fairy Box"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Ceramic Box with Lid and Pillow, 2 1/2" x 4 1/2"
$20

What stories this little box by the Pelzels could tell!  A "Tooth Fairy Box" dressed in festive red and green with a just-right fitting lid, awaits first a fallen tooth lain with care on the tiny pillow inside, with lid replaced just so.  Next, after trying his best to stay awake, just as the child drifts off to sleep, a gossamer-winged fairy comes to collect her due.  The quick darting fairy replaces the tooth with a crisp dollar bill and a thank you note.  What joy the next morning when while still groggy, the child opens the box.  Mom moves the Tooth Fairy box to a shelf to await another tooth's fall.  Mom doesn't know that her boy, finding it hard to wait for the tooth, climbs a chair to check the box each morning just in case the fairy decided to bring an extra delivery . . .

HP & Sandra Pelzel "Sushi Bowl" at the Joyful Jewel 6-18-14

"Sushi Bowl"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Ceramic 6 1/2" diameter, with wooden Chopsticks
$23

What fun it would be to serve rice and sushi in this beautiful bowl by the Pelzels. I love the red inside and the hint of bamboo on the outside.  Even the chopsticks, which were not made by the Pelzels, are beautiful..  The Pelzels, Sandra Boyd Pelzel and her husband HP Pelzel, have thought of a great way to keep the choptsticks from rolling off as you present the nourishing goodness to your guest! There are currently two of these matching bowls at the Joyful Jewel - one for you and one for your dinner companion.

HP & Sandra Pelzel "Paper Weight" at the Joyful Jewel

Ceramic Paper Weight
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Ceramic with Metal Leaves and Finial, glass beads
~ 4" dia. x 4" tall
$25

It's only a paperweight, but what a beautiful piece of art it is!  The colors are absolute magic and of course the paperweight does his job exceptionally well, keeping everything in it's place as you rush in and out of the room.  Surely having this piece on your desk would encourage the kind of swirly dreamy conditions that lead to seeing beyond the paper to a place of creative breakthroughs.

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel "Sun Vase" at the Joyful Jewel 2-28-14

"Sun Vase"
HP Pelzel and Sandra Boyd Pelzel
~4" x 6"
$35

Ok, I admit it, I gave this saucy sunny vase the name, "Sun Vase" but HP and Sandra Pelzel gave it shape and design.  It's a spunky young thing, stockily stable and full of heat and movement in the art work glazing.  I especially like the repeating sun rays on the bottom.  Perhaps it will have daffodils, matching the sun's yellow, in it soon!

"Ceramic Rattle"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Ceramic Pod, ~ 6" x 2 3/4"
$20

Just the thing to have sitting on your desk, a ceramic rattle by HP & Sandra Pelzel!  When you need to remember the mirth, shake the rattle and do a little dance.  When you're feeling stressed shake the rattle fast and hard to let it all out.  When your sister comes in let her do the rattling reminding her that you used to play with her when she was a baby - by, what else, shaking her rattle.  And after she reminds you that you actually took the rattle away from her, you can say, "Yes but I am giving you this one now!"

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel - Dimensional "Flower" Plaque at the Joyful Jewel 11-11-13

Dimensional "Flower" Plaque in Clay
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
10" x 10" Ceramic Piece Mounted on Wood with Hanger in Back
$60

In person it's easy to see the dimensions of this clay wall plaque.  What I've called flowers could in fact be amoeba-like cells undulating and frolicking among the waves.  This is a very organic looking piece that is also cheerful with wavy flouncy flowers" sporting blue-trimmed petticoats.

HP & Sandra Pelzel "Flower Plate" at the Joyful Jewel 9-3-13

Flower Plate

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel

Ceramic, 10" diameter

$35

What a fun and well balanced design HP and Sandra Pelzel have composed on this plate.  We are invited to fill it with brownies or peanut butter cookies, maybe with angel food cake or cracker canapes.  I say we don't just hang it on the wall but use it as often as possible, as it calls us to touch and enjoy.

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel "2-Piece Collander" at the Joyful Jewel 7-28-13

"Two-Piece Collander"
HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel
Pottery, ` 8 1/2" diameter x 4 1/4" + Tray
$35

The Pelzels have created a bowl perfect for blueberries or other fruit.  You can wash the fruit right in the bowl and let the water run out the sieve, then put the bowl on it's tray to catch any extra drainage.  And, how beautiful the blueberries or red cherries will look against the creamy green of the bowl!  There are even handles to so you can pass the bowl around the table, or easily bring it out to the patio for a romantic evening with your sweetie. Such joy from a utilitarian piece of art!

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel "Free Form Bowl" at the Joyful Jewel 6-6-13

"Free Form Bowl"

HP Pelzel & Sandra Boyd Pelzel

Pottery, ~ 6" x 4"

$25

HP and Sandra Pelzel told me that this bowl was formed around a balloon!  The design was carved into the clay and then the piece was laid around the balloon.  As the clay hardened, the balloon was popped and the shape was further worked until the makers were happy with the free form shape.  I love the funny, lilting shape they decided on.  Seems just right that the natural clay color is offset with darker highlights and muted green interior.

Teapot with Two Cups

HP Pelzel and Sandra Boyd Pelzel

$125 set

The Pelzels have made an exquisite tea set which is perfect for displaying as pieces of pottery art, and also can be used for a lovely tea time.  I see is a look of some foreign country in this, perhaps Persia, and a feeling of ancient ceremony.  Let's meet for tea and sweets, just the two of us!      ~ Mariah

HP & Sandra Pelzel "Eared Bowl & and Vase" at the Joyful Jewel 4-24-13

"Eared Bowl and Vase"

HP Pelzel and Sandra Boyd Pelzel

Ceramic, Bowl: 5 1/2" x 3", Vase: 3" x 4 1/2"

Bowl $18, Vase $15

What perfectly beautiful pieces of pottery these are!  Each is formed with sweet even, sinuous shape and glazed with lush blue and burgundy.  Even the ear handles on the bowl are perfectly coiled and useful as secure gripping (I might say caressing) finger holds.  They are separate pieces that go together so well.                                                                                    ~Mariah
