Sarah McTeer Ogburn "Secrets" at the Joyful Jewel 5-31-13

 "Secrets"
Sarah McTeer Ogburn
Mixed Media, 16" x 20", Limited Ed. Giclee Print
$140

I love all of Sarah McTeer Ogburn's work but this one is really special to me.  It features a magnificent moon, a beautiful Spirit Woman (with Secrets!) in a brilliant blue dress that matches the mountains in the background.  Next to her are what Sarah told me are Indonesian Wedding Birds.  They look at bit like peacocks tucked up close next to her, and they are said to bring fertility and good fortune.  The expressions on all parties seem so full of love and tenderness, a state of grace between the woman, the moon and this extraordinary landscape.  I want to learn these Secrets!             ~ Mariah

Joseph Sand "Stein Mug" at the Joyful Jewel 5-29-13

Stein Mug
Joseph Sand
~ 4" x 6 1/2 " plus handle, ceramic
$25
I'm thinking that Joseph Sand made this particular mug large enough for a healthy portion of hot chocolate or coffee.  Surely it would hold a whole beer too and would be fun to use as a stein with frothy foam dribbling down the sides mixing with the glaze froth.  It's handle is big enough for a large hand and it has a thumb notch for wielding it robustly while singing a beer-drinking song.

Gerald O. Dukes "Bride" 5-28-13

"A Bride"
Gerald O. Dukes, Photographer

Here is a beautiful example of  the type of photographs that Gerald O. Dukes takes for weddings.  This photograph was taken the day before the wedding outdoors where the wedding would take place.   I think the wistful look in her eyes shows her comfort with the photographer and also the reverence and awe she has for how her life will be changing.

Best known here for his artistic photographs and scenery, Gerald also takes family portraits, pets, graduation and other commissioned work.  Sometimes he takes photographs in his studio within the Joyful Jewel. Other times he takes them on location of an event.

Jan Dunn "Feather Your Nest Basket" at the Joyful Jewel 5-26-13

"Feather Your Nest Basket"
Jan Dunn
Hand Dyed Basket Reed, ~ 4" x 5" + hanging handle
$15
This sweet little basket that Jan Dunn imagined and then created is one of my very favorite things at the Joyful Jewel!  I'll be saving shed cat hair and dryer lint for Jan's next round of Feather Your Next Baskets.  Jan says, "Birds (chickadees, titmice) appreciate fine materials to line their nests with such as pet hair, yarn, thread, string, cotton batting, dryer lint.  In the sprint, fill the basket with any of these materials and hang on a tree limb several feet off the ground -- near a nest box, if you have one.  The birds will thank you!"
What fun it will be to see who comes to remove the materials and carry them off.  Watch closely and you may discover where the nest is hidden, and which nestlings will grow up inside it comforted within by this softness.

"Flowers for Mary"
Marrianna Osolin-Putnam
16" x 20" Acrylic on Canvas
Original, $150

It seems that Marrianna could just have easily called this colorful painting "Flowers for May" as it certainly makes me think of the colors arriving as we get close to the beginning of Summer.  Such beauty portrayed in a whimsical fanciful way delights the senses and we can almost smell the sweet scents they exude.

Ashley L. Morra and Sherwood Lemoine at the Joyful Jewel 5-23-13

Purple Bird House
Ashley Lemoine Morra and Sherwood Lemoine
~10" x 12", Wood
It's time to put out new birdhouses.  Surely a feathered beauty will see this house as the perfect attractant for a mate.  Afterall, who doesn't love purple!
Cuckoo Designs started out as a hobby between a father and daughter that eventually blossomed into a birdhouse business. The style reflects their shared love for folk-art and vibrant colors. The idea of creating birdhouses began when Sherwood, Ashley’s father, retired and was recovering from treatment after battling colon cancer. This provided him with an outlet that allowed him to forget about his daily health struggles, as well as pass the day.
One day, Ashley decided to paint one of the birdhouses. She found that it too provided her with a creative outlet by helping re-kindle her love of sketching and painting. So, they made a decision to combine their talents and start a small business focused on designing folk-art style birdhouses.
Each birdhouse is unique and completely made by hand. The designs are derived from events, animals and landmarks found in North Carolina and Louisiana. They are sketched on paper and then transferred onto wood by both Ashley and Sherwood. Another unique quality about each birdhouse is that they each have a hand-stamped brass or copper tag featuring the name and logo of the business.

Kate Ladd Sunflower Gourd Bird House at the Joyful Jewel 5-22-13

"Sunflower Gourd Bird House"
Kate Ladd
~6" x 10" plus hanger, Gourd, Paint, Raffia
$40
Inspired by her featured month at the Joyful Jewel, Kate Ladd continued her love of sunflowers by painting several gourds to use as bird houses.  They made such a fun whimsical addition to her sunflower paintings, hanging merrily in the window.  Each one is painted a different color; this yellow one is my favorite and surely would be a favorite for a Carolina Wren, Blue Bird or other small bird.  Gourds make durable and practical containers -- and houses!

Beth Shaffer "Teapot Birdhouse" at the Joyful Jewel 5-21-13

"Teapot Birdhouse"
Beth Shaffer
various utensils!, ~ 7" x 7"
$45
Beth Shaffer is just as much fun as her wind chimes and these whimsical birdhouses.  This one is small, made from an old fashioned recycled single cup tea or coffee pot -- with that friendly worn look that Kerugs just don't have!  The lid makes a nice rainshield roof, and there are two places for the bird to perch while feeding her/his young.  Just imagine the sweet tinkling sound of a light rain combining with the yearning tweets of the young.
Beth says, "I make whimsical wind chimes from reclaimed recyclables. My great grandfather was a blacksmith. Funny to think that three generations later that I'm working with metal. It must be in the genes. I would like to think he would like my work!"

On a Monday 5-20-13

A Carolina Wren flies off Rita Baldwin's wall to perch right over on a sunflower gourd birdhouse of Kate Ladd's. On Sarah Mcteer Ogburn's wall, a  woman with a Bluebird on her Shoulder smiles knowingly, watches a snake slither off Vangi Cathcart's wall and enter the path of  Nature'sTemple by Marilyn Penrod. Meanwhile, Shannon Buecker's dogs run past Florence Johnson's barn, pick up Brooks' flamingo, Forrest Greenslade's horse, Nancy Smith's llama, Emma Skurnick's rabbit, and Beth Bale's rooster. They parade across Gerald Duke's Haw River Bridge to land in Sharon Blessum's flower garden of cards. Some drink wine out of Pelzel's goblets, others pour tea from Jerry Fowler's teapot as eat cookies from Luke Jack's plate. The more adventurous try on Jody Jameson Jewelry and Roxanne Hollander jackets. They look in Donna Cassidy's mirror to ooh and aah, turn on a Winger CD and ready books, maybe by Hudson or Moose. Artists on the loose. Oh my!

Shannon Wall "Pine Needle Basket with Sharks Teeth" at the Joyful Jewel 5-19-13

"Pine Needle Basket with Sharks Teeth"
Shannon Wall
6" diameter, NC Longleaf Pine Needles, Walnut Shell, Sharks Teeth, Artificial Sinew
$50
Shannon Wall has collected, processed and woven what must be millions of pine needles to make this sweet-yet-tough basket.  The lacy-looking slice of shellacked walnut shell in the bowl contrasts with the sleek power of the sharks teeth.  I wonder if she gathered this impressive collection of  teeth herself at one of our NC beaches.  This basket is sturdy and beautiful, expertly stitched and coated with protectant.  It makes a stunning piece of art to be displayed in a place of honor, as well as a useful basket to hold keys or what not by the front door of a busy household.                              ~ Mariah

Shannon Bueker "Birds in Grass" ceramic wall piece at the Joyful Jewel 5-18-13

"Birds in Grass"
Shannon Bueker
ceramic wall piece, ~ 9" x 14"
$125
Known so well for her vibrant animal watercolor paintings, Shannon Bueker is less known for her pottery even though I think she's been doing it on the side for a long time.  You can see the same type of nature scene here, with all of the sense of movement in the grass and similar colors as you might find in one of Shannon's paintings.  Yet here it is gracing a three dimensional good-sized wall hanging.

Brooksie Edwards "Green Fused Glass Plate" at the Joyful Jewel 5-14-13

"Fused Glass Plate - Green"
Cathy "Brooksie" Edwards
Fused Glass, ~ 8 1/2" Square
$42
This stunning fused glass plate bye Brooksie Edwards seems to shine from within.  She's used iridescent glass and adorned it with spiral designs and geometrics.  I love seeing the plate displayed on a stand, but it certainly would look great against a white table cloth with it's generous beauty revealed as the dates and figs on it are lifted off of it to eat.
Brooksie says, "Listening to my soul has brought me to the awakening of my artist self. Starting out as a musician on my path then led me to the art form of fused glass. I love being able to combine design with color. Like life, the rough edges smooth and the layers get integrated. There is structure with the opportunity of expansiveness. "

On a Monday

I was about to post some photos for you but something else took over....our artist book. I am just completing a page for each artist to have a hard copy here at the counter for customers to see. I'm including a photograph of each person, unless I just can't find one, as well as whatever artist statement you have given to Mariah. It has been a wonderful experience for me to focus on each of you for many months. Friends, we are part of an amazing community. We have such down-to-earth, in-the-earth, of-the-earth, artists! I doubt any of us can fully realize what as astonishing opportunity we are afforded to be a part of the Joyful Jewel Artists. A new fellow walked in today, will bring his work to show Mariah, this week, and I tell you he was a man of soul. It just keeps happening.................

Debbie Englund "Face Mug" at the Joyful Jewel 5-8-13

Face Mug
Debbie Englund
ceramic, ~ 4" x 4 1 /2"
$25
Get your morning off to a laugh and wake up too, with this whimsical face mug by Debbie Englund.  I love the eyebrows and red lips, but most of all I love, because I recognize it, the exasperated expression that one sees in their loved ones when silliness takes over!
Debbie says, "Each piece is unique.  Just like all over the world no two faces are exactly the same.  After I have the vessel-mug, jug etc. (or plaque), I’ll usually start with the nose and then make the other features fit the face.  After applying the features I’ll do a little carving to enhance the expression.  I’m happy when their faces make people smile.  Also they are dishwasher and food safe.

Jerry Fowler "Large Vase" at the Joyful Jewel 5-7-13

 "Large Vase"
Jerry Fowler
~6" x 18", Ceramic
$95
This simply elegant tall vase reminds me of Oriental art, bamboo against a white background.  What a perfect stand for an umbrella at the front door, holding a dried flower or peacock feather next to the fireplace mantle, or displayed on it's own shelf on the wall.  This is  a masterfully created vase, sturdy and ready for a collector of North Carolina pottery.
Jerry Fowler began making pottery in High School.  He studied Ceramics under Carlton Ball at Univ. of Southern California and built catenary arch kilns at UCR and in Brazil.  Pieces on display have been fired in a variety of ways.

Carolyn Levy "Curvy Platter/Bowl" at the Joyful Jewel 5-6-13

Curvy Platter/Bowl with Leaves
Carolyn Levy
Pottery, ~ 13 1/2" x 9"
$45
This cross between a platter and a blow would hold a variety of delicious dishes, adding to their flavor with it's glistening green leaves and welcoming shape.  Carolyn Levy fashioned this flouncing platter by hand and adorned it with several veined leaves, I'm thinking Beech tree leaves.  The smooth glaze and creamy subtle tones of green-tinged with an undescribable earth tone is especially satiny giving the impression of softness and a swirling dance.                              ~ Mariah

Susan Luster "Terra Cotta Fern" at the Joyful Jewel 5-5-13

"Terra Cotta Fern" Wall Hanging
Susan G. Luster
ceramic, glaze, reclaimed wood - 9 1/2" x 18"
$70
This gorgeous fern, memorialized on Susan G. Luster's terra cotta pottery, and then mounted on a reclaimed piece of barn wood, is just asking to take it's place on a nature-lover's wall.  Susan has an unusual way of creating her pottery using slab and hand building techniques.  As you might guess, much of her inspiration for making and decorating pottery comes from the plant world. Each piece has leaves pressed into the clay before it is fired. The plant material is removed, leaving an impression that is enhanced with glaze or underglaze, making them appear to be alive in the clay after they are fired.

Beth Bale "Kobe" 5-4-13 at the Joyful Jewel

"Kobe I, Kobe II, Kobe III"
Beth Bale
Watercolor, 12 1/2" x 15 1/2" each, Framed
$68 each

I thought I'd post the vibrant watercolors by Beth Bale in honor of the Kentucky Derby.  These paintings are different artistic versions of the same horse.  This is Beth's horse "Kobe" trotting in all his glory!  Each painting, sold separately, is under glass and framed in a simple black frame.  They would look best, of course, all three displayed together as they are just now at the Joyful Jewel.
